Jaruco, Mayabeque. Line 138 approved at the Sixth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, indicates that the Cuban State will guarantee social assistance to all persons who are physically handicapped, with intellectual retardation and those families with low economic solvency.
Precisely to comply with this guideline, the work of the 21 social workers in Jaruco is recognized by the territorial governmental authorities.
In the 35 districts of the municipality, these men and women serve more than 200 families in different ways and 22 children benefited with the Victoria Task, according to local press Gisela Llanos González, Head of Department of Prevention, Assistance and Social Work.
She said that throughout the year social workers in Jaruco conduct research and identify new or possible cases of economic need, but also raise awareness of the population on issues related to labor insertion, the eradication of domestic violence and child abuse, hence that they would be called "doctors of the soul".
The Social Workers program was launched in September 2000 on the initiative of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro.
